If a new conservative government takes office, they have promised that local residents will gain new powers that will see off any new wind farm projects within six months. The commitment to stop the erection of onshore wind farms is the ever latest hardening of Conservative rhetoric on green energy. Existing subsidized onshore turbines would remain in place, and all turbines currently under construction or which have previously been granted legal permission would still be executed. However Energy Minister, Michael Fallon has said that no more onshore wind turbines would be put in place beyond 2020, which at this point is expected to be double the current wind sectors capacity. Under current planning rules big onshore wind farms can undermine the wishes of local people. The Conservatives however plan to stamp this out by changing the rules whereby the power would be given to local councils to decide engaging local politicians to reflect the views of concerning residents. If the conservatives win the election next year they would put the walls up on wind farms by November 2015 as Mr Fallen expressed. The UK has “enough” onshore turbines.
