Europe’s biggest electricity storage program turns operational in the UK
A grid storage series consisting of a 6MW/10MWh lithium-ion battery has been put in Leighton Buzzard. The initial 2 year program carried out by Samsung SDI, S8C Electric Europe and Younicos has been constructed to assist in the possible role of energy storage in the future UK national grid. The project which is estimated to cost £18.7 million has been designed to offer an alternative way to decrease capacity constraints whilst helping to balance the energy generated by low carbon origins as wind farms and solar PV panels.
The 6MW/10MWh battery was funded to a certain degree by a £13.2 million grant from Ofgem in 2012 through the low carbon network fund.
Managing director of S&C Electric Europe, Andrew Jones said "Energy storage can play a major role in balancing the grid as it solves the problem of renewable intermittency by absorbing surplus power and releasing it when needed. This function simultaneously helps to securely balance capacity and supply and protects the grid from stress events, e.g. power outages, on the grid. The introduction of energy storage in substations like the one at Leighton Buzzard can decrease the need and cost of traditional reinforcement, such as transformers and cabling.”
Are you wondering how you could save electricity and heating bills at home?
Perhaps your even already considering a new central heating solution. Are electric radiators for you? Efficient electric radiators have surged over recent years as a cost effective solution in heating your home. Running costs are low starting from just a few pence per hour, quick Installation, no pipes, 24hour 7 day a week programming. These are just a handful of benefits from a new generation of electric heaters.
An additional objective of the scheme is to discover replacement revenue channels for energy storage. It has been forecasted that the grid storage scheme would cancel the demand for £6 million in network reinforcement expenditure. Developers record that through using load shifting and frequency control, its possible that the grid could be effectively stabilised over traditional thermal generators allowing larger grid capacity for renewable energy.
