Full competition investigation into UK energy market
The UK energy market has been immensely under the spotlight over the past year, with Ofgem today announcing that the industry is to under go an entire investigation from the Competition and Market Authority. Although this has been on the running since March earlier this year it has only today been made official. But we have to ask the question, what will this mean to the millions of customers right across the UK?
The investigation should ensure that competitions works sympathetically for customers through bringing down prices whilst flurrying improvements in customer service and development. Additionally it should help reinstall long over due confidence for investment into the energy sector and complete Ofgem's recent efforts to support the market into a much clearer, fairer and simpler field for consumers.
The probe by the CMA is scheduled to last at least 18 months again placing the dominant big six energy companies under the spotlight. All of Npower, e.on, EDF, SSE, Scottish Power and government owned British Gas will undergo in depth investigation covering their practices and impacts they have inlaced over the market entirety. Since the tremendous price hikes over the last quarter of 2013m there has been continuous controversy over the monopoly grip which the big six have, with some even relating it to a 'cartel' type operation, whereby one firm hikes up their pricing structure with the rest following in a flurry. The real dent being the ways it restricts better choices for customers. Highly competitive suppliers such as Ovo have found it immensely hard to shake up the market even though they are offering more competitive tariffs that the dominant six energy companies, but why is this?
Make the right energy selection
Up until only a few weeks ago it many consumers have been cornered out of switching energy suppliers with out instilled confidence. Some times taking weeks and weeks, with typical confusion around account balances and monies owed. Ofgem has since tightened up this policy which now loosens the lasso over consumers allowing switching to be undertaken in just days. Hopefully this will not only improve more people to leave the giant suppliers in search for a better deal but also stimulate the market, just like we do with our car or household insurance hopping from one company to another which is offering the best available deal. This puts immense pressure on energy companies for the better, instilling better customers service in order to retain their customers. A superb move by Ofgem, with the next step being the investigation from the CMA into handing back energy control into the finger tips of consumers.
But as to what effect will the CMA have?
It is Ofgem that has engaged the CMA to look in depth at whether there is enough competition between the giant energy providers and if customers that do not switch regularly are being charged inflated prices. Energy firms that have had customers on their books for years on end may be tempted to bill them at a slightly higher rate than their other customers for reasons that they're are ever so unlikely to change suppliers at clicks notice. Both Ofgem and CMA want to stamp out this operation, so that all customers are provided with the best deals as they equally should.
It's fantastic news that we've been able to get the energy supplier switching time down to only 2 days. However it is time for the government to spread the word through advertising campaigns awakening consumers at home how simple it is. It's all chips and gravy making things better and easier but its no good if households and businesses are unaware of this practice. We hope to see some large awareness campaigns from the government following this break through.
