Is Electric Heating Expensive?
Electric heating is not as expensive as media hype makes out. However It can be of course. Running costs depend on the type of electric heating system you have and how you use it. Whilst it is generally regarded that electric heating systems are more expensive than conventional heating such as gas and wood-burning stoves. groundbreaking technologies have provided a path to significantly lower running costs. A new generation of electric radiators have become a genuinely respected rival over traditional heating systems, owing to their money saving capabilities. Home owners that do not have access to gas often have no option other than to use electric heaters. And as you are probably aware, old electric storage heaters along with panel hearers are not energy efficient. In this article, My Electric Radiators want to set the record straight and demonstrate how electric heating is no longer as expensive as people might think. Let’s just say, we want to bust a few myths and show you that electric heating can be an affordable, viable and green option for your home or business.
What are electric heaters and why choose them at all?
To begin we will clear up the varying electric heating systems available, which you might refer to as good or bad. Electric radiators, storage heaters and electric panel heaters. As we’ve already established electric storage heaters are expensive to run. Electric panel heaters can usually be found in apartments or offices, are costly to run and not suitable for a principle source of heating. Electric radiators on the other hand provide an energy efficient solution for the entire house. They posses dual heating elements, transfer 100% of electricity into heat and provide rapid and even heat distribution.First of all, electric radiators are manufactured from aluminium which emits radiated and convected heat. The room therefore warms quickly and uses less energy. Aluminium is also strong, lightweight and aesthetically pleasing. The component that gives electric radiators the edge over other electric heating systems is the thermostat. This gives you the power to control individual room temperatures at times that suit your typical use.
Controlling energy usage
The amount of heat you need depends on a number of factors such as room size, the number of people in the room, the number of rooms you are heating, the temperature outside and how much heat you are losing. Our electric radiators have a built-in intelligent control system that gives you complete control of the amount of energy you are using. Essentially, you get to choose what temperature you want to heat a room and how many rooms you want to heat. Whereas conventional radiators waste energy by unnecessarily overheating a room, and every room in the house, contemporary electric radiators are fitted with microchip technology that can judge the temperature of a room and automatically adjust the temperature to a setting of your choice. Cutting edge electric radiators are fitted with a highly sensitive digital thermostat that monitors air temperature. Once you program the thermostat to the desired temperature, the system regulates the heat. As a result, electric heaters use less power consumption and prevent you from wasting electricity. We estimate that one hour’s worth of heating can consume the equivalent of 20 minute’s worth of electricity. Thanks to the features and design of modern electric radiators, home owners can significantly lower annual energy bills because they give you more control over the amount of energy you use to warm your home.
Installation and maintenance
Electric heaters are a lot easier to install and maintain than gas central heating systems. They are also less dangerous, do not require pipework or a flue and require less maintenance. Electricity is also widely available all over the UK. Furthermore, gas central heaters can emit fatal levels of carbon monoxide. Because of the risks involved with gas heaters, regular maintenance checks are required. This invariably means taking the day of work waiting for a gas technician to call at any time between 10am and 4pm. Electric heaters have very few moving parts so require very little maintenance. There is certainly no requirement to use up a holiday day at work and wait for a maintenance man. The electric heaters at My Electric Heaters are also very simple to install. All our electric radiators come with mounting brackets and a template for accuracy. And because the heaters are made from aluminium, they are easy to lift and attach to the wall. Installation should take no more than 15 minutes.
Running costs of electric heaters
The running costs of home heating systems are not an exact science, for electric or gas. Ofgem estimates the average UK household consumes around 13,500 kWh a year at a cost of £2,053. However, a number of factors can effect these estimates. Whilst we cannot provide exact data, we have prepared a scenario which provides you with an outline of running costs you can expect from one of our electric radiators. We’re basing our calculations on a room sized 5m x 2m which requires a 1200W electric heater. At the time of writing, this will cost 18.49p an hour with an ordinary electric heater. With our cutting edge technology however, you can reduce your heating costs by up to third. These estimates obviously depend on your behaviour and how well insulated your home is. If you have a well-insulated loft and energy efficient doors and windows, you may want to set the temperature to a lower setting and use less energy. The built-in thermostat means your electric heater uses far less energy. For example, you may set the radiators to work for 10 hours a day, but because the room is at the right temperature, you may only use four hours of electricity. Likewise, you can switch off the radiators in rooms you are not using rather than heating the whole house unnecessarily. We therefore estimate average heating costs will be no more than £72 a month for a three-bedroomed house. Check out our range of electric radiators today.
