Stiffer energy efficiency target would boost Britains economy by £62bn
Environmentalists say that a 40% reduction in energy use by 2030 via means of efficiency control that by 2030 we should see an increase in Britain's GDP by a whopping £62bn, whilst also creating 40,000 new jobs in the process.
Reaching a lower target of 30% would boost the UK economy by £17.3bn and make way for 13,000 jobs, claims a study by independent consultancy Cambridge Econometrics, gathered by WWF following an access to information request.
The findings stress the importance of composing the economy to reduce its energy usage. Fantastic news for those already following the right path with energy efficient electric heating or other efficient appliances. Brook Riley a spokesman for Friends Of The Earth said “The benefits of energy efficiency are impressive and we need to be ambitious, GDP gains are three times higher with a 40% reduction target than with 30%. It is significant that the countries which were hardest hit by the financial crisis – Greece, Portugal, Ireland – are among the strongest advocates of going as far as we can."
All EU energy and environmental ministers are meeting in Milan to address energy efficiency objectives as a collection of climate and energy intentions for 2030 which also includes shunting renewables to a 27% slice of market share whilst also slashing greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.
A blossoming efficiency target of 30% has all but been pencilled in, although Germany and Denmark would like to see this number raised slightly. The target of 30% has opposition by Poland and the UK, although on the basis of costs and states' freedom to choose their own policy.
Although environmentalists still stress that the lesser targets towards 2030 will cast doubts over reaching Europe's goal of 80-95% decarbonisation by 2050. precisely as CO2 cuts are the only ones which are currently binding on EU states. For this reason energy efficiency targets are seen as the front runner.
