Yorkshire power plant secures £238m for carbon capture
A carbon capture power plant has been approved on the land next to the 426 MW Drax power plant near Selby, North Yorkshire. Drax is the UK's largest power station after securing £238m through European Union funding to assemble a power plant named the White Rose. It is believed that up to 90% of it's carbon dioxide emissions would be captured and secured deep below the North sea. In addition it's estimated that the operation would supply enough energy to over 630,00 homes.
But should all this money be better spent on renewable energy such as wind or solar?
It is thought that Friends Of The Earth firmly stand by. The white rose developers insist however, that the carbon capture development is a far greater, cost effective and environmentally friendly solution to green energy. But they fail to mention that the CO2 being pumped into 'undersea storage in the North Sea' will surely flush out unobtainable fossil fuel reserves? Perhaps they are steering clear from this question because of what it might mean to their net emission figures?
